Questions About the Portumna Trail?

We've answered what seniors most often ask us about our woodland walks in Galway

Our Portumna lakeside trail walks are typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on which route we take. We move at a conversational pace—if you can chat with someone beside you, we're at the right speed. There are benches along the trail, so we stop whenever you need to rest and take in the views.

This walk is genuinely designed for people who might be returning to exercise after years of not doing much, or for those managing minor joint or breathing concerns. You don't need to train beforehand. What matters is that you're willing to walk gently for the duration—no scrambling, no steep climbs.

Walking poles are brilliant for stability and take pressure off your knees—we encourage them. The Portumna trail is mostly well-maintained forest paths, not technical terrain. If you use a walking stick or have balance concerns, let us know when you book and we'll pair you with our guide who can offer an arm or spot adjustments to the route.

Galway's lakeside can be fresh and breezy, even in summer. We recommend layers you can add or remove—a moisture-wicking base, fleece or lightweight jacket, and a windproof outer layer. Waterproof trousers are worth it if you're prone to wet grass bothering you. Good walking shoes with grip are essential; the forest can be damp underfoot.

The Portumna Forest Park car park has a toilet block, which is where we gather before the walk. Once we're on the trail, there are no facilities, so use before we head out. We plan our route timing around comfort—if you need to return to the car park, that's completely fine and happens regularly.

We run walks spring through autumn—April to October gives us the best light, warmth, and manageable underfoot conditions. Winter walks are possible but the forest can get muddy and darker earlier in the day. Summer is lovely but busier; spring and autumn offer wildflowers, changing leaves, and quieter paths. Pick whatever season appeals to you most.
